I could not remember anything about APCO, but the words “MICROSOFT CONFIDENTIAL” required little explanation.

I called my wife from the airport while waiting for my ride. 

 “It’s over,”  I said.

 “How can that be?”  She asked.

 “I seemed to have taken information from a confidential document and put data from it into another document that I gave to Google.”

 “What’s in the document?”

 “Nothing significant. Stories of how other multinational companies succeeded in China.  Like how much money HP and IBM made last year.”

 “So just tell them that this content is public,” she suggested

 “But I could just tell from the grin on Steve Ballmer’s face.  He said if the source was Microsoft confidential and Microsoft  paid for it, then it cannot be used in public documents. That’s also why we failed when we tried to get Microsoft witnesses to admit that VPs could judge what is confidential and what’s not. They insisted VPs could not waive the confidentiality label.”

 “Just relax. There is a way out,” she tried to calm me down.

 “I don’t think so. It’s really over.  I give up. I will tell Google to blame it on me. They hired the wrong person. They don’t need to suffer because of my mistakes.”
